On 13 Septembre 2017, the International Olympic Committee confirmed that Paris will be hosting the Olympic games in 2024!
Paris has hosted the Olympics 3 times and 2024 will mark 100 years since they last hosted the Games. Paris would be the second city to hold 3 Summer Games after London and before Los Angeles.
After three (failed) attempts and 12 years, Paris has finally been awarded the Olympic Games!
Quickly following the 2024 Olympics, Los Angeles will be hosting in 2028.
This was an unusual announcement because they awarded two cities instead of one. Because of the extreme cost for staging the games, Paris and Los Angeles were the two bids last standing.
The 2016 Olympics was said to have cost about $1.6 billion. However, both Paris and Los Angeles emphasized that their cities have almost 90% of the needed facilities to host the Games; therefore, reducing the cost.
“Mr Macron is in the continuity of Mr (Francois) Hollande in that he is personally involved in the bid. It is a very, very strong gesture that shows the unity and strength of Paris 2024,” the three-time canoeing Olympic champion said.
This is very exciting news for Paris!
Thanks to venues such as the Stade de France and Roland Garros, most of the the necessary infrastructure is already in place.
From the Ile-Saint-Denis to the north, where the Olympic village is planned, to the Bercy arena, and the banks of the Seine. The Seine will be cleaned up for the Games so that it can host swimming and open water events.
The many historic monuments will be the backdrop for dozens of events: the Champs-de-Mars in front of the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides and the Champs Elysées, where the cycling road race are going to finish.
